Boreal Ridge
Saturday, November 28, 1992

Weather

Initially very cold with strong winds, but warmed up a little as the clouds cleared. Cold enough for continued snowmaking throughout the day.

Conditions

Mostly man-made snow machine groomed. Icy patches evident in many places as the surface powder got heaped into ridges.

Overall

Considering Boreal's reputation as "Boring Hill" because of its limited vertical, the skiing was surprisingly enjoyable, with varied types of run and terrain. The view from the summit across the Sierra's is magnificent.

Easy Runs

Primrose(*) - Path to avoid Tamarack. Short.
Lower Mariposa(*) - Long, not very steep trail through the trees. Not recently groomed, so more challenging than its green rating would imply.
Lower Sierra(*) - Flat bottom part of Sierra run. Shallow powder on hardpack.
Kiss A Bear(*) - Short rather bumpy run used at the top end of the beginner's lessons.
South 40(*) - A little steeper than the other green runs, but well groomed.
Lower Prospector(*) - Run in to the express quad lift. Very icy especially at the bottom.

Intermediate Runs

Tamarack(*) - Short steep path down to Lower Mariposa run. The steep start and rather bumpy section made it interesting.
Mariposa(*) - Rather worn trail, with plenty of rocks showing. Quite steep for a blue trail, but not very long.
Sierra(*) - Main "motorway" route down from the summit. Wide, with varying gradient. Lots of loose powder, ridged very early in the day.
Prospector(*) - Steep section from the top of the quad lift. Plenty of fresh powder meant that it was much easier than it looked from the top.

Advanced Runs

Race Course(*) - Short steep slope made more difficult by icy patches.
